January 5, 2023 by Ricky Church

Apple TV+’s television adaptation of Presumed Innocent, based on Scott Turow’s bestselling novel, has filled another one of its major roles alongside Jake Gyllenhaal’s lead. According to Deadline, Ruth Negga (Preacher) has joined the series to play Gyllenhaal’s wife as he’s put on trial for murder.

Presumed Innocent revolves around “a horrific murder that upends the Chicago Prosecuting Attorneys’ office when one of its own is suspected of the crime [and explores] obsession, sex, politics and the power and limits of love, as the accused fights to hold his family and marriage together.”

Negga will play Barbara Sabich, “an artist, gallerist, mother and wife whose life is upended when her husband, Rusty Sabich (Gyllenhaal), is accused of murdering his mistress. Barbara fights to keep her family intact as she tends to her broken heart and broken marriage, and contends with her husband’s highly publicized trial.”

Presumed Innocent comes from David E. Kelley, who will serve as writer, executive producer and showrunner. Bad Robot Productions, David E. Kelley Productions and Warner Bros. Television are produce the series for Apple with Bad Robot’s Abrams and Rachel Rusch Rich executive producing alongside Kelley and Gyllenhaal. Directing the first two episodes is Anne Sewitsky (A Very British Scandal), who will also executive produce.
