Ana de Armas on shooting John Wick spinoff Ballerina with Keanu Reeves

January 9, 2023 by Gary Collinson

It’s a busy time for the John Wick franchise, what with the fourth movie incoming this year alongside the three-part limited series The Contintental, but the action doesn’t stop there as cameras are currently rolling on the series’ first big screen spin-off, the Ana de Armas-led Ballerina.

The film is in production now under director Len Wiseman (Underworld), and de Armas some time out from filming recently to appear on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, during which she discussed the gruelling shoot, as well as working with John Wick himself, Keanu Reeves.

“We’ve been in Prague filming for four months. We still have one more month to go. And I’m in pain. You know, my body, my back, everything hurts. I’m complaining, I’m sore, I’m bruised,” said de Armas. [No Time To Die] was fifteen minutes. This is a whole movie, another level.”

“The other day, Keanu and I were rehearsing our very difficult stunt scene, and this man is just rolling and throwing me and doing crazy stunts,” she continued. “And I’m like – I can’t complain anymore. Because he is doing it! He truly is the best.”

Ballerina will mark the third time that de Armas has worked with Reeves, the two having starred together in 2015’s Knock Knock and 2016’s Exposed. Reeves’ role in the spinoff will be limited to a cameo, with the actor stating last month that “he’s only “in it for a few sequences.”

Alongside Reeves and de Armas, the cast of Ballerina also includes John Wick veterans Anjelica Huston, Ian McShane, and Lance Reddick, as well as Gabriel Byrne (The Usual Suspects), Norman Reedus (The Walking Dead) and Catalina Sandino Moreno (From).

Ballerina is currently without a release date, but fans of the franchise don’t have to wait much long for John Wick: Chapter 4, which is set to open in March.
