Black Panther’s Danai Gurira “gently alludes” to Okoye Disney+ series

January 19, 2023 by Gary Collinson

Back in May of 2021 when it was announced that Danai Gurira would be reprising her role as Okoye in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, reports also circulated that the Walking Dead star was also heading to Disney+ for a Wakanda-based Marvel series, and now it seems we have official confirmation.

Appearing on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, Gurira said that “I have been told that I can gently allude to this possibility, so I am gently alluding” when asked by the host about the reports of an Okoye spinoff series.

At this point, we don’t have any further details on the series , although Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever director Ryan Coogler will presumably be involved in some kind of executive producing capacity at the very least. A previous report from Deadline had called the project an origin story for the Dora Milaje general, but that remains unconfirmed.

On the press tour for the release of the Black Panther sequel this past November, Marvel producer Nate Moore teased the prospect of multiple Wakanda-themed series, stating that “there are no shortage of ideas, let’s put it that way.” With Gurira getting permission from the super-secretive Marvel to drop this confirmation then it seems a pretty safe bet the Okoye series is moving forward, perhaps even as soon as Phase Six?

In Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett), Shuri (Letitia Wright), M’Baku (Winston Duke),Okoye (Danai Gurira) and the Dora Milaje (including Florence Kasumba), fight to protect their nation from intervening world powers in the wake of King T’Challa’s death. As the Wakandans strive to embrace their next chapter, the heroes must band together with the help of War Dog Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o) and Everett Ross (Martin Freeman) and forge a new path for the kingdom of Wakanda.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever reunites Ryan Coogler with his Black Panther stars Danai Gurira (Okoye), Letitia Wright (Shuri), Winston Duke (M’Baku), Lupita Nyong’o (Nakia), Florence Kasumba (Ayo), Angela Bassett (Ramonda) and Martin Freeman (Everett Ross), while new additions include Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams/Ironheart, Tenoch Huerta as Namor, Michaela Coel as Aneka, Mabel Cadena as Namora and Alex Livanalli as Attuma.
