Batman: Caped Crusader moves to Amazon after HBO Max drops animated series

March 11, 2023 by EJ Moreno

Batman fans were devastated when HBO Max moved away from developing Batman: Caped Crusader, a potential iconic animated series. Now, the project has new life on another streamer as Amazon has placed a two-season order for the show.

Batman: Caped Crusader comes from the powerhouse trio of Bruce Timm, J.J. Abrams, and Matt Reeves. This would mark the first collaboration between Batman creators Timm (Batman: The Animated Series) and Reeves (The Batman). At the same time, the project would’ve reunited Abrams and Reeves after working together on Felicity.

Batman: Caped Crusader was first announced in May 2021, when the trio announced the project would serve as an homage to Batman: The Animated Series, a landmark moment for the Dark Knight. Timm, Abrams, and Reeves served as producers, while writer Ed Brubaker ran a writer’s room and worked alongside Timm on the 10-episode first season.

In 2021, Abrams and Reeves said in a joint statement: “We are beyond excited to be working together to bring this character back, to tell engrossing new stories in Gotham City. The series will be thrilling, cinematic, and evocative of Batman’s noir roots while diving deeper into the psychology of these iconic characters.”

Warner Bros. Animation began shopping around Batman: Caped Crusader following Warner Bros. Discovery cutting the show to preserve some money. The hope for WBD would’ve been to monetize content by selling projects to third-party buyers, even though Warner has been the home to DC content for decades.
