Steven Knight to write Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s Star Wars movie

March 23, 2023 by Matt Rodgers

Another day on the Star Wars merry-go-round has seen Steven Knight swap Peaky Blinders razor blades for Lucasfilm lightsabres with the news that he is set to inherit Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s Star Wars movie following the departure of original screenwriters Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson.

Variety reveals that the Locke and Taboo writer is set to set to pen the screenplay for the Untitled Star Wars film, which has Ms. Marvel‘s Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy currently attached to direct.

With production set to begin in February 2024, and a planned release date of December 19th, 2025, this will be Lucasfilm’s first big-screen outing since 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, a film which caused as much apathy as its predecessor had done anger, so there’s a lot riding on it.

With the recent canning of both Kevin Feige’s Star Wars film and Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron, as-well-as the radio silence concerning Taika Waititi’s long-gestating Star Wars movie, Steven Knight now has a real job on his hands coming up with something to relaunch the cinematic Star Wars universe.

Lucasfilm will hope there aren’t anymore disturbances in the force before next month’s Star Wars Celebration, where we can expect to discover more information on the film, like its title, a brief synopsis, and maybe even a star.
