Robert Downey Jr. and Robert Pattinson to headline Adam McKay’s Average Height, Average Build

March 26, 2023 by EJ Moreno

Robert Pattinson and Robert Downey Jr will face off in a new star-studded film from Adam McKay.

McKay is set to write and direct in a project reportedly called Average Height, Average Build. The Hollywood Reporter describes the film as “part serial killer thriller, part comedy,” as it follows a serial killer (Pattinson) who gets into politics in an effort to change the laws to be more murder-friendly, a satire of political lobbyists.

Amy Adams, Forest Whitaker, and Danielle Deadwyler have also joined the cast and will star alongside Pattinson and Downey Jr.

The film is highly political, with McKay reportedly noting the “project would appeal to both sides of the political spectrum.” Still, some reports say that not everyone who has read it agrees. McKay has already done films on the housing crisis and climate change, so the political lobbyists’ angle fits the current style.

Though, there are some indications that the film is hitting a bit of a roadblock. THR notes several studios “already passed on it while others are taking their time to crunch numbers.” Reports show that a dark political comedy in the current theatrical landscape will not work, and Average Height, Average Build could find a home on streaming. Heading to streaming will give the film a bit of a financial bind; the A-list cast could require significant up-front buy-outs.

McKay is known for star-studded films with big casts that do surprisingly well, so the film will eventually find a home. McKay’s last film, Don’t Look Up, was a massive success for the filmmaker, landing a nomination for best picture, with McKay receiving a nomination for best original screenplay at that year’s Oscars.

Apple does have a first look deal with filmmaker Adam McKay, and they have not opted for the project. Filming for Average Height, Average Build is set to begin late this summer in Boston.
