Kathleen Kennedy wants to take the “James Bond” approach to releasing Star Wars movies

May 5, 2023 by EJ Moreno

Kathleen Kennedy is in one tough spot concerning Star Wars. Fan interest will always be there, the shows are moderate hits, and the future films are coming together.

But when it comes to how and when these films are released, the Lucasfilm president says she wants to bring back the magic that a Star Wars film once brought to the cinema.

In a new interview, Kennedy explains to Empire Magazine that she wants to make Star Wars event films again, telling the outlet: “I’ve often brought up [James] Bond. That’s every three or four years, and there wasn’t this pressure to feel like you had to have a movie every year. I feel that was very important to Star Wars. We have to eventise this. It’s much better, to tell the truth, that we’re going to make these movies when they’re ready to be made and release them when they’re ready to be released.”

Kennedy explains where the stories will take place, hinting that the Mandoverse could serve as the current present for the film standpoints, but we’ll see some time jumps. “What we’re exploring is the evolution of the Jedi. We’re going very far back, we’re looking at the present, and now we’re moving 15 years after The Rise Of Skywalker,” says the executive.

We even get a hint at the new film with Daisy Ridley’s Rey Skywalker, giving our first story idea of what will happen in the Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy-film. Kennedy teases the project, “The Jedi are in chaos – there’s even a question of how many exist anymore – and Rey’s building the New Jedi Order, based on the text that she was given and that Luke imparted on her.”
