Joaquin Phoenix teams with Todd Haynes for new gay drama

May 21, 2023 by EJ Moreno

Joaquin Phoenix is set to star in what filmmaker Todd Haynes calls “a love story between two men set in the 1930s.” Haynes has unveiled his upcoming project with Phoenix, a first-time collocation between the two, in a new interview for Les Inrockuptibles.

“There’s another movie I want to do in early 2024. It’s a project that Joaquin Phoenix brought to me, and it’s set in the 1930s. A love story between two men based on an original, very audacious scenario. This is, I believe, his first gay role. I am very excited about this project,” Haynes tells the outlet during Cannes.

For the first time in his illustrious career, Phoenix will tackle an LGBTQ role, which some actors rely on just for awards. Phoenix has received nominations for his work in Gladiator, Walk the Line, The Master, and Joker. He won in 2020 for his turn in Todd Phillips’ Joker, which the long-awaited sequel is currently in post-production.

Todd Haynes is currently promoting May December, starring Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore, which premiered at the 76th Cannes Film Festival. Haynes is best known for his films I’m Not There, Carol, and The Velvet Underground.
