Amber Heard to premiere new film In the Fire at Taormina Film Festival

June 17, 2023 by Gary Collinson

Before she returns to the big screen this December reprising the role of Mera in Warner Bros. and DC Studios’ Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Amber Heard is gearing up to kick off her comeback post-Johnny Depp trial by appearing at Sicily’s Taormina Film Festival to premiere her new film In the Fire.

Directed by Conor Allyn (No Man’s Land) and co-starring Eduardo Noriego, the supernatural thriller takes place in 1899 and sees Heard playing a pioneering American psychiatrist who “arrives on a rich farm in Colombia after being called to solve the case of a disturbed child following increasingly insistent accusations that the child is the devil. While the woman tries to psychoanalyze the child, the nefarious events intensify and her “cure” becomes a race to save the little boy from the fury of his fellow citizens, and perhaps, even from himself.”

In the Fire will mark Heard’s first promotional duties following her high profile legal battles with ex-husband Johnny Depp, who made his own big screen comeback earlier this year with the French historical drama Jeanne du Barry, which premiered at Cannes.

According to Deadline, Heard is now looking to focus her attention back on her film career, although it’s unclear at the moment whether she will be part of DC’s promotional plans for its Aquaman sequel. Heard claimed in court that her character’s role was cut down “a bunch” as a result of the negative publicity surrounding her and Depp’s legal troubles. while a petition to remove her from the sequel amassed over two signatures. However, despite rumours that WB and DC were looking to recast and reshoot the character’s scenes, Lost Kingdom producer – and new DC Studios co-chief – Peter Safran confirmed that firing Heard had never been considered.
