Gal Gadot says her Cleopatra film will change the narrative

July 2, 2023 by EJ Moreno

Gal Gadot is still moving ahead with the controversial Cleopatra film, but it seems like she wants to use her position for the good of the “Cleopatra” name.

Kari Skogland will direct the project, replacing Wonder Woman helmer Patty Jenkins, and while the project is still time away, Gadot spoke in a new interview about her intentions with the Cleopatra story. Speaking to Vogue Hong Kong recently, the actress opened up about the project in detail for the first time. She dove into her background with Cleopatra and what she plans to do with the story’s narrative.

“Israel borders Egypt, and I grew up with so many stories about Cleopatra, and she’s like a household name. You know, if Wonder Woman is the imaginary strong female leader, Cleopatra’s actually the real one,” says Gadot. “That’s a perfect example of a story that I wanted to tell because I started reading different books about Cleopatra, and I said, ‘Wow, that’s fascinating.’ All I ever saw in regard to Cleopatra from the film was that she was this seductive woman who had an affair with Julius Caesar and Marc Anthony. But the truth is, there’s so much more to her.”

The praise for the iconic Cleopatra did not stop, but Gadot continued to push that she wanted to change the public perception of this character.

Saying, “This woman was so ahead of her time. Egypt and what Egypt was back then was still futuristic to where we are today. I can’t say much. But to me, I’m so passionate to tell her story and to bring justice to this character and her legacy and celebrate her and her legacy. We have a beautiful script, and I cannot wait to share this story with the world and change the narrative of Cleopatra simply being a seductor.”

Gadot’s Cleopatra is some time away, but she’ll soon star in the action film Heart of Stone, which is set to premiere on Netflix this August.

Gal Gadot is Agent Rachel Stone, the only intelligence operative who stands between her global peace-keeping organization and the loss of its most valuable — and dangerous — asset, codenamed: The Heart.

Heart of Stone is directed by Tom Harper (Peaky Blinders) and stars Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman), Jamie Dornan (The Tourist), Alia Bhatt (RRR), Sophie Okonedo (Death on the Nile) and Matthias Schweighöfer (Army of Thieves).
