Is skipping Superman’s origin story the best choice for James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy?

July 6, 2023 by EJ Moreno

Have we seen enough origin stories in our superhero movies? Specifically, are fans passed the need to cover the early days of Superman? James Gunn asks that question with his new project, Superman: Legacy.

Through various social platforms this past week, the filmmaker and DC Studios co-chair continued his early marketing campaign for the film by giving away even more secrets about the project. He has now confirmed we’ll skip early Clark Kent days and jump straight into the action.

On his Bluesky account, a fan asked Gunn if he would look to adapt the All-Star Superman comics’ opening pages. That’s when Gunn breaks the news that enough with origin stories. “I think we’ve seen his origin enough in film at this time!” Gunn replied.

Many are wondering if this will work in terms of the intended reboot. Will people want a more classic superhero film with origin to early days covered, or could Gunn take a page from Matt Reeves’ playbook and introduce us to a hero a few years into the game?

He also notes that he’ll take a “unique path” in handling the story of Clark and Superman through the film’s score. Gunn seems to be already cooking something up in the music department, as he confirms below…

David Corenswet was recently cast in James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy alongside Rachel Brosnahan, who will star as Lois Lane. Little is known about the project, but reports claim we will see Superman face off with The Authority in a world already familiar with superheroes.

The official synopsis states Superman: Legacy “tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”

Superman: Legacy is scheduled to open in theaters on July 11th, 2025.
