Luca Guadagnino to direct Bret Easton Ellis’ The Shards for HBO

July 6, 2023 by Matt Rodgers

Suspiria and Call Me By Your Name director Luca Guadagnino is set to direct the HBO series adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’s novel The Shards.

According to Spanish publication El Independiente (via World of Reel) the Bones and All helmer will once again team up with HBO following 2020 mini-series We Are Who We Are to direct an unspecified number of episodes of The Shards.

American Psycho author Bret Easton Ellis’ first novel in 13-years, The Shards follows a group of privileged Los Angeles high school friends as a serial killer strikes across the city. The author will be adapting his own book, and has stated that there will be subplots added in that weren’t in his story. The show is set to have three seasons of ten episodes each, with Ellis writing them all.

The Shards official synopsis reads: 17-year-old Bret is a senior at the exclusive Buckley prep school when a new student arrives with a mysterious past. Robert Mallory is bright, handsome, charismatic, and shielding a secret from Bret and his friends, even as he becomes a part of their tightly knit circle. Bret’s obsession with Mallory is equalled only by his increasingly unsettling preoccupation with The Trawler, a serial killer on the loose who seems to be drawing ever closer to Bret and his friends, taunting them with grotesque threats and horrific, sharply local acts of violence.

Next up for Guadagnino is tennis love-triangle drama Challengers, which is set to premiere at the Venice Film Festival. Watch the trailer here.
