Jonathan Frakes is “very interested” in the possibility of Star Trek: Legacy

August 4, 2023 by Ricky Church

The past few years has seen Star Trek make quite a resurgence on television beginning with the prequel Star Trek: Discovery and continuing on in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and venturing further into animation with Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Prodigy.

This year saw the return of the Star Trek: The Next Generation crew in the third and final season of Picard and actor Jonathan Frakes, who played William Riker on TNG and has directed several episodes of various Star Trek series – the most recent being the Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks crossover – has spoken about the possibility of continuing the franchise with Star Trek: Legacy.

In the finale of Star Trek: Picard, Seven of Nine is promoted to captain of the newly christened USS Enterprise-G with Raffi as her first officer, Picard’s son Jack Crusher serving as an ensign and Geordi La Forge’s daughter Sidney at the helm. The series ended with the characters musing on the next adventures of the Enterprise and what legacy Seven will leave behind as its new captain along with Jack coming face to face with an old foe of his father’s in a new test of humanity.

Speaking with Variety prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike, Frakes reminisced on his long career in Star Trek and what the future could hold as Picard‘s showrunner Terry Matalas has made no secret about his wish to develop Star Trek: Legacy that will pick up on Seven and Jack’s adventures. Frakes said he is “very interested in the idea” of its the potential and thinks it’s only a matter of time until it is greenlit.

“I think they can’t deny not only the fan reaction, but the fact that the numbers put the show at the Top 10 on the streaming charts. And that season of Star Trek: Picard was arguably the among the best seasons of any Star Trek — I think we all agree on that. I mean, Star Trek fans are loyal. It’s not millions and millions of people, and it’s not the youngest fandom in the world. But I am an eternal optimist, and I believe in a perfect world, they will find the assets and the energy and hire Terry to put together this Legacy show and that will, in fact, come to fruition.”
