First look at Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks’ WWII series Masters of the Air as January premiere set

October 5, 2023 by Ricky Church

After years in development, Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks’ second Band of Brothers follow up Masters of the Air is set to premiere on Apple TV+ on January 26th, 2024. Along with the announcement, Apple released a batch of first look photos showing the cast that includes Austin Butler (Elvis), Callum Turner (The Capture) and Barry Keoghan (The Banshees of Inisherin). Check them out below…

Masters of the Air follows the men of the 100th Bomb Group, nicknamed the Bloody Hundredth, who flew their bombing planes over Nazi Germany in raids which helped turn the tide of the war. Spielberg and Hanks have been looking to make a miniseries focused on the air force for several years after their previous World War II dramas Band of Brothers and The Pacific, the former of which has been hailed as one of the best miniseries and depictions of WWII ever produced even 20 years after its premiere. The duo have re-teamed with Gary Goetzman, who executive produced Band of Brothers and The Pacific, to tell Masters of the Air.

“Masters of the Air is a salute to the brave men of the 8th Air Force, who, through their courage and brotherhood, helped defeat Nazi Germany in World War II,” Goetzman said. “Tom and Steven have always wanted to visualize cinematically what our author Don Miller has called, this ‘singular event in the history of warfare.’ We’re thrilled that Apple TV+ has given us the opportunity to combine the efforts of so many talented people, on-screen and behind the camera, to tell this important story.”

Based on Donald L. Miller’s book of the same name, and scripted by John Orloff, “Masters of the Air” follows the men of the 100th Bomb Group (the “Bloody Hundredth”) as they conduct perilous bombing raids over Nazi Germany and grapple with the frigid conditions, lack of oxygen, and sheer terror of combat conducted at 25,000 feet in the air. Portraying the psychological and emotional price paid by these young men as they helped destroy the horror of Hitler’s Third Reich, is at the heart of “Masters of the Air.” Some were shot down and captured; some were wounded or killed. And some were lucky enough to make it home. Regardless of individual fate, a toll was exacted on them all.

Masters of the Air stars Austin Butler, Callum Turner, Barry Keoghan, Anthony Boyle, Nate Mann, Rafferty Law, Josiah Cross, Branden Cook, Ncuti Gatwa, James Murray, Tommy Jessop, Kai Alexander, Freddy Carter, Adam Long and Nikolai Kinski.

Masters of the Air will premiere with two episodes on January 26th followed by weekly releases until its finale on March 15th, 2024.
