Cyberpunk 2077 to receive live action adaptation

October 7, 2023 by EJ Moreno

Cyberpunk 2077 had a rocky road as a video game. Now, it will look to find its footing in live-action film and television.

It was announced this week that CD Projekt Red will team up with Anonymous Content to develop a new story set within the Cyberpunk universe. The production is currently looking for a screenwriter,

Although its unclear at this point whether the project will take the form of a movie or TV series, the development will be watched closely by the Cyberpunk 2077 creative team and Garrett Kemble, Anonymous Content Studios’ head of television, its director of development Ryan Schwartz, and CCO David Levine.

Per the release from CD Projekt Red, Kemble, Levine, Schwartz, and Bard Dorros will produce for Anonymous Content alongside Charlie Scully.

The story of 2020’s Cyberpunk 2077 saw the player assume the role of “V” (played by Gavin Drea/Cherami Leigh), a mercenary in the fictional Californian city known as Night City. We follow the follow from a heist gone wrong that results in an experimental cybernetic “bio-chip” containing an engram of the legendary rock star and terrorist Johnny Silverhand (played by Keanu Reeves) threatening to overwrite V’s mind slowly.

Gamers joined Reeves again for the recent expansion, Phantom Liberty, which debuted on September 26th and stars Idris Elba as Solomon Reed.

Let’s hope the team learns how to budget and prepare more; Cyberpunk 2077‘s total cost to develop and market (including updates and DLC) is reportedly over $436 million, making it the second-most expensive game ever.
