Paul Greengrass to adapt Drowning: The Rescue of Flight 1421 for Warner Bros.

November 29, 2023 by Matt Rodgers

Paul Greengrass is set to return to the world of aviation based terror with the news the Bourne helmer is to write, direct and produce an adaptation of T.J. Newman’s novel Drowning: The Rescue of Flight 1421 for Warner Bros.

According to Deadline the studio won a hotly contested bidding war for the rights, paying $1.5 million to fend off the likes of Apple and Bruckheimer, Paramount and Damien Chazelle, Legendary and Universal Television, and have hired the United 93 and Captain Phillips filmmaker to bring the novel to the big-screen.

Written by flight attendant turned New York Times bestselling author T. J. Newman, Drowning: The Rescue of Flight 1421 is described as an adrenaline-fueled thriller which tells the story of a commercial jetliner that crashes into the ocean and sinks to the bottom with passengers trapped inside. Among them is an engineer and his 11-year-old daughter. His estranged wife is part of the elite rescue team that races to save the survivors before their air runs out.

Drowning would mark Greengrass’ first foray behind the camera since 2020’s Tom Hanks starring Western News of the World.
