Doctor Who – The War Doctor Begins: Enemy Mine arrives from Big Finish

December 13, 2023 by Andrew Newton

Big Finish Productions has today released the final volume of Doctor Who – The War Doctor Begins series.  The series has been adding to the mysterious War Doctor’s early adventures since the summer of 2021 and this finale, titled Enemy Mine, sees the War Doctor’s early skirmishers come to an end.

The finale features three audio adventures that conclude the story of Case, the Berserker class cyborg Dalek/human hybrid fighting in the Time War. Case is voiced by Ajjaz Awad and the War Doctor features the voice talents of Jonathon Carley who has won well deserved acclaim for his similarity to the late, great Sir John Hurt.

In The Hybrid’s Choice by Ajjaz Awad-Ibrahim, the War Doctor believes Case to be dead but the fate of the Dalek/human hybrid may be much worse as she is recruited by the enemy.  With Case’s inner self being in conflict, can the Dalek Time Strategist find a way to seal her fate?

Fear Nothing written by Mark Wright sees the Doctor’s search for Case being interrupted by Commodore Tamasan who forcibly brings the TARDIS to a remote TARDIS drydock facility at the edge of the war.  While she makes the Doctor a dangerous proposition, Case has been sent on a mission to eliminate a key Time Lord asset that could change the course of the war.

Finally, in Exit Strategy by Matt Fitton, neither the Dalek Time Strategist nor the War Doctor have given up on Case but whether she can be saved and even if the War Doctor is the man to save her waits to be seen.

The War Doctor’s Jonathon Carley is joined by Beth Chalmers (Veklin), Adèle Anderson (Tamasan), Nicholas Briggs (the Daleks), Becky Wright (Jodall), Louise Faulkner (Greyliss) and David Monteith (The Nurse).

Actor Jonathan Carley said: “It’s the end of an era. When Ajjaz first appeared as Case way back in Warbringer I always felt there was more to her story and thought it would be great if we could revisit that. Clearly everyone else felt the same.”

Producer David Richardson added: “And so the beginning ends… it’s the final box set of The War Doctor Begins as we reach the conclusion of the story of the War Doctor and Case. “It’s a turbulent and emotional final chapter with a very special appearance as Paul McGann vworps in as the Eighth Doctor. How can he appear alongside his later and forgotten incarnation? All will be revealed…”

Doctor Who – The War Doctor Begins: Enemy Mine is available now from the Big Finish website as a collector’s edition CD box set with digital download for £19.99 or digital download only for £16.99.
