Wonka wins the box office weekend while Night Swim hardly makes a splash

January 8, 2024 by Matt Rodgers

Come with me, and we’ll be, in a world of seasonal staying power. Doesn’t quite roll off the tongue, does it? It does however sum up the performance of box-office champ Wonka, which has remained atop the U.S. box-office with $14.4 million in its fourth weekend of release.

The Warner Bros. musical prequel has managed to show some legs beyond the holiday season, taking its domestic total to $164.6 million, and it’s global tally to a sweet $465 million.

Traditionally one the slowest months of the year at the box-office, Blumhouse decided to dip their toes in the winter water once again with the swimming-pool horror Night Swim. Sadly it couldn’t kick-start the year in the same way that the studio did with 2023’s M3GAN ($30.2M), because the critically derided damp squib (read our ★★ review here) landed with a very moderate $12 million. The Wyatt Russell and Kerry Condon-led film only cost $15 million to produce, so taking into account the overseas gross of $5.7 million, Night Swim will still turn a profit, but it will be at the shallow end of the studio’s success stories.

Elsewhere Universal and Illumination’s animated duck flick Migration continued to flap its wings to the tune of 10.5 million. After three weeks this really-rather-good slice of family-fare has managed to gross $78 million in North America and $150 million around the world.

There was also more good news for Sony’s R-rated comedy stable, because following the success of 2023’s No Hard Feelings ($87M WW), their Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell vehicle Anyone But You scored a rare 9% increase over the previous weekend’s gross. The $25 million budgeted comedy has now amassed $43.7 million at the domestic box-office.

Finally, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom managed to flounder across the $100 million mark after three weeks of release by adding a further $10.6 million to its total. The Warner Bros. and DC era-ending sequel has earned a worldwide total of $334.8 million.
