David Gordon Green exits The Exorcist: Deceiver as Universal pulls sequel from release schedule

January 12, 2024 by Matt Rodgers

In the wake of The Exorcist: Believer‘s underwhelming critical and commercial performance, David Gordon Green has departed Universal and Blumhouse’s franchise resurrection, and the sequel has been removed from the release calendar.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Green has left to focus on his Ben Stiller-led comedy Nutcrackers, as well as season four of HBO series The Righteous Gemstones.

The second installment of the rebooted franchise, The Exorcist: Deceiver, was meant to hit theaters on April 18, 2025, but has now been removed from the schedule.

When Universal paid the unholy amount of $400 million for the rights to The Exorcist they were hoping that Gordon Green could steer them to the kind of financial success he’d achieved with their Halloween trilogy, but 2023’s The Exorcist: Believer was cast out by fans and critics alike, earning just $65 million at the North American box-office, and $136.2 million globally.
