Universal launching a “new Jurassic era” from producer Steven Spielberg and writer David Koepp

January 22, 2024 by EJ Moreno

We’ve been to Jurassic Park and explored Jurassic World, but the new era could be even better as Deadline has broke the story that Universal has “fast-tracked” a new installment from the franchise’s original Jurassic Park screenwriter David Koepp.

Little has been reported on this new film, but Deadline notes that the project will be a standalone film and a “completely fresh take on a Jurassic era.” Although it is being billed as a new Jurassic World, none of the characters from Jurassic World nor Jurassic Park are making their return for this movie.

One of the most exciting details is that this still-untitled Jurassic film will be executive-produced by Steven Spielberg through Amblin Entertainment. With Spielberg producing and the original writer returning, the nostalgia may not come from the characters but instead from tone and style.

Screenwriter David Koepp is best known for adapting the first two movies from 1993 and 1997’s The Lost World from Michael Crichton’s novels. There’s no word if he’s returning to the source material for this forthcoming film.

Koepp is fresh off penning the new Steven Soderbergh-directed ghost film Presence, which Deadline notes is “100% currently on Rotten Tomatoes and up for sale here at Sundance.”

Universal will want to ride that momentum and tap back into one of its most prolific and profitable franchises. There have been six Jurassic movies, and they’ve grossed more than $6 billion worldwide.
