Saw 8 is actually happening; new writers hired

February 9, 2016 by Luke Owen

Well, despite 2010’s Saw 3D marking the ‘end’ of the franchise, it didn’t stay dead for long. Like Friday the 13th finishing with Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter in 1984 and then another eight movies got made, Saw 8 has been officially announced by Lionsgate.

Saw 8 – which will be titled Saw: Legacy – will be penned by new script writers Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger (Piranha, Sorority Row), and original writer and directing duo James Wan and Leigh Whannel will serve as executive producers. It’s unknown at the moment whether Saw: Legacy will be a sequel or reboot, so keep your eyes out for updating news.

First debuting in 2004, Saw became something of a horror classic and made an impressive $103 million worldwide from it’s meager $1.2 million budget. Over the next seven films, the franchise has made a total of $870 million globally with the final entry, Saw 3D, costing the most at just $20 million. With numbers like that, it makes sense that Lionsgate were keen to greenlight another one. Hell, they greenlit more Hunger Games movies despite there being no more books to base them on.

There’s no release date for Saw: Legacy just yet.
