Amazon’s Blade Runner 2099 lands director Jonathan van Tulleken

February 20, 2024 by EJ Moreno

Blade Runner 2099 is underway, and Amazon Studios just landed a prestige TV director as Deadline reports that Shōgun filmmaker Jonathan van Tulleken is set to helm the project. He’ll direct and executive produce the first two episodes.

Tulleken is stepping in for Jeremy Podeswa, who was initially set for the project. Ridley Scott is executive producing the live-action series, with Silka Luisa writing, showrunning, and executive producing.

Little is known about Amazon Studios’ Blade Runner 2099, but it’s described as “the latest installment of the neo-noir sci-fi franchise and will be set 50 years after the film sequel.”

“The original Blade Runner, directed by Ridley Scott, is considered one of the greatest and most influential science-fiction movies of all time, and we’re excited to introduce Blade Runner 2099 to our global Prime Video customers,” said Vernon Sanders, head of global television, Amazon Studios.

Sanders adds: “We are honored to be able to present this continuation of the Blade Runner franchise and are confident that by teaming up with Ridley, Alcon Entertainment, Scott Free Productions, and the remarkably talented Silka Luisa, Blade Runner 2099 will uphold the intellect, themes, and spirit of its film predecessors.”

The project will follow the events of director Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049.
