Star Trek: Strange New Worlds renewed for fourth season, Lower Decks concluding with season 5

April 13, 2024 by Ricky Church

Quite the pair of news for Star Trek fans today. Paramount has announced Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has already been renewed for a fourth season while its animated series Lower Decks will end with its upcoming fifth season this fall.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is currently filming its third season in Toronto for a 2025 premiere. It follows the crew of the USS Enterprise before James Kirk became its Captain with Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike and Ethan Peck as Spock. Also starring in the series is Rebecca Romijn as Una Chin-Riley, Jess Bush as Nurse Christine Chapel, Christina Chong as La’An Noonien-Singh, Celia Rose Gooding as Nyota Uhura, Melissa Navia as Erica Ortegas and Babs Olusanmokun as Dr. M’Benga.

“On behalf of the cast and crew of ‘Strange New Worlds’ we are thrilled and grateful to continue our voyages together. We can’t wait for you to join us and the crew of the Enterprise on another season of exploration and adventure,” said co-showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers and executive producer Alex Kurtzman.

Meanwhile, Star Trek: Lower Decks will end with its fifth season that is set to premiere sometime this fall. The animated comedy follows a group of junior officers aboard the USS Cerritos as they adjusting to life on a starship, travelling the galaxy and investigating strange mysteries and dealing with diplomatic issues between various races while trying to move up in their ranks. The series features the voice cast of Jack Quaid, Tawny Newsome, Noël Wells, Eugene Cordero, Dawwn Lewis, Jerry O’Connell and Gillian Vigman.

Last year Lower Decks and Strange New Worlds had a crossover episode where Quaid’s Brad Boimler and Newsome’s Beckett Mariner travelled back in time and encountered the Enterprise, reprising their animated roles in live-action.

“We wanted to let you know that this fall will be the fifth and final season of Star Trek: Lower Decks,” said creator Mike McMahan and executive producer Alex Kurtzman. “While five seasons of any series these days seems like a miracle, it’s no exaggeration to say that every second we’ve spent making this show has been a dream come true. Our incredible cast, crew and artists have given you everything they have because they love the characters they play, they love the world we’ve built, and more than anything we all love love love Star Trek. We’re excited for the world to see our hilarious fifth season which we’re working on right now, and the good news is that all previous episodes will remain on Paramount+ so there is still so much to look forward to as we celebrate the Cerritos crew with a big send-off.”

We’ll have to wait a bit longer to learn when the final adventures of Star Trek: Lower Decks will premiere, but it is expected sometime this fall.
