Park Chan-wook set to produce an Oldboy TV series

April 17, 2024 by EJ Moreno

Oldboy put South Korean cinema on the map, and now Park Chan-wook is returning to the story once again as Lionsgate is teaming up with the filmmaker to develop an English-language TV adaptation of Park’s iconic film. He will produce the new series version along with his producing partner, Syd Lim.

“Lionsgate Television shares my creative vision for bringing Oldboy into the world of television,” said Park. “I look forward to working with a studio whose brand stands for bold, original, and risk-taking storytelling.”

“Park is one of the most visionary storytellers of our generation, and we’re excited to partner with him in bringing his cinematic masterpiece to the television screen,” said Scott Herbst, executive vice president and head of scripted development for Lionsgate Television. “This series adaptation of Oldboy will feature the raw emotional power, iconic fight scenes, and visceral style that made the film a classic.”

2003’s South Korean masterpiece Oldboy told the story of Oh Dae-Su, a man kidnapped and imprisoned for fifteen years, then released, only to find that he must track down his captor in five days. The cast included Choi Min-sik, Yoo Ji-tae, Kang Hye-jung, and Oh Dal-su.

There was also a 2013 remake of Oldboy from Spike Lee starring Josh Brolin, Elizabeth Olsen, Sharlto Copley, and Samuel L. Jackson. It was not met with the same level of acclaim of the original outing.
