Maze Runner reboot in the works at 20th Century Studios

May 4, 2024 by Matt Rodgers

As if caught up in the death-defying game itself, 20th Century Studios have wasted no time at all in sprinting towards developing a reboot of the decade-old Maze Runner trilogy.

According to The Hollywood Reporter the Disney-owned studio is looking to kick-start a fresh adaptation of the YA action adventure franchise, which grossed $950 million at the worldwide box-office between 2014 and 2018.

Wes Ball, who directed the original trilogy and is behind the forthcoming Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will be involved as a producer, while the studio is in talks with Jack Palgen (Transcendence) to write the script.

The report states that the reboot is not a new take on the best-selling books by James Dashner, nor is it a direct sequel to the original trilogy, but a continuation of the world established in those movies.

The Maze Runner starred Dylan O’Brien (Love & Monsters) as Thomas, a teenager who wakes in a glade at the center of a giant labyrinth, who like the other kids dumped there before him has no memory of his previous life. He quickly becomes part of the group and soon after demonstrates a unique perspective that scores him a promotion to Runner status — those who patrol the always-changing maze to find an escape route. Together with Kaya Scodelario’s Teresa, the only female, Thomas tries to convince his cohorts that he knows a way out of the maze.

2014’s The Maze Runner made almost $350 million off a budget of $35 million, with 2015’s Maze Runner: Scorch Trials adding $312 million, and 2018’s trilogy-capping Maze Runner: The Death Cure running off with $288 million.
