Taylor Sheridan’s Lioness renewed for second season

May 9, 2024 by Ricky Church

Paramount has renewed Taylor Sheridan’s spy drama Lioness for a second season. The Paramount+ series stars Zoe Saldaña, Nicole Kidman, Laysla De Oliveira, Michael Kelly and Morgan Freeman.

Lioness, which was formerly titled Special Ops: Lioness but has now been shortened for its forthcoming season, follows a special CIA program designed to combat terrorism with Saldaña as an experienced operative and De Oliveira a former Marine who is recruited into the program. Kidman oversees it alongside Michael Kelly’s CIA executive while Morgan Freeman plays the US Secretary of State.

“Our Paramount+ audience resoundingly has joined forces in support of Lioness’ gripping, global story and the powerhouse performances from Zoe Saldaña, Laysla De Oliveira and Nicole Kidman,” said Jeff Grossman, Paramount +’s Executive Vice President of Programming. “We cannot wait to see more of the heart-stopping suspense and action that Taylor Sheridan and the incredibly talented team deliver in its second season.”

“Lioness captivated audiences around the world as one of the most-watched global series premieres on Paramount+ last year,” said Chris McCarthy, Office of the CEO, Paramount Global and President & CEO, Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios. “Driven by Taylor Sheridan’s masterful storytelling and Nicole Kidman and Zoe Saldaña’s remarkable performances, season two promises to immerse audiences in yet another riveting, adrenaline-fueled journey.”

Sheridan created Lioness and executive produces the series. It is just one show in his Paramount TV empire as he is also currently working on the final season of Yellowstone along with a sequel series, the prequels 1923 and 1944 and other spin-offs, Landman starring Billy Bob Thorton, Mayor of Kingstown with Jeremy Renner and Tulsa King with Sylvester Stallone.

LIONESS, inspired by an actual US Military program, follows the life of Joe (Zoe Saldaña) while she attempts to balance her personal and professional life as the tip of the CIA’s spear in the war on terror. The Lioness Program, overseen by Kaitlyn Meade (Nicole Kidman) and Donald Westfield (Michael Kelly), enlists an aggressive Marine Raider named Cruz (Laysla De Oliveira) to operate undercover alongside Joe among the power brokers of State terrorism in the CIA’s efforts to thwart the next 9/11.

Lioness stars Zoe Saldaña, Laysla De Oliveira, Michael Kelly, Morgan Freeman, Nicole Kidman, Dave Annable, Jill Wagner, LaMonica Garrett, James Jordan, Austin Hébert, Jonah Wharton and Hannah Love Lanier.
