Jeffrey Wright cast in The Last of Us season 2

May 24, 2024 by Ricky Church

HBO has announced Jeffrey Wright (The Batman) has joined the second season of The Last of Us, the hit series that is an adaptation of Naughty Dog’s successful and beloved video game franchise.

This will not be Wright’s first foray into the world of The Last of Us. He voiced and provided motion capture for the character Isaac Dixon in The Last of Us Part II and it seems, much like how Merle Dandridge reprised her role as Firefly leader Marlene for the first season, Wright will once again play Isaac in season two.

Isaac is the leader of the Washington Liberation Front, a militia group who “sought liberty but instead has become mired in an endless war against a surprisingly resourceful enemy.”

Wright joins a cast that will see Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey returning as Joel and Ellie alongside newcomers Kaitlyn Dever and Isabela Merced among others. The second season will largely adapt The Last of Us Part II, but series creator Craig Mazin has previously stated that, due to the game’s length, it’s likely it will take more than one season to tell, saying “It’s going to be more than one season. There’s more story, so this show will not end with Season 2 unless people don’t watch it and we’ll get canceled.”

The Last of Us story takes place twenty years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both must traverse the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.

The Last of Us season 2 sees the return of Pedro Pascal as Joel, Bella Ramsey as Ellie, Gabriel Luna as Tommy, and Rutina Wesley as Maria alongside new cast members Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Young Mazino as Jesse, Isabela Merced as Dina, Ariela Barer as Mel, Tati Gabrielle as Nora, Spencer Lord as Owen, Danny Ramirez as Manny, Jeffrey Wright as Isaac and Catherine O’Hara in an undisclosed role.

The Last of Us season 2 is coming to Max in 2025.
