Van Helsing procedural series coming to CBS

June 28, 2024 by EJ Moreno

We all know CBS loves procedural dramas; think of their hit series, which include CSI, Criminal Minds, and Elementary. Now, they’ll get spooky with a new Van Helsing series.

Deadline reports that after a “hotly contested auction,” CBS has begun developing the series from writer Jonathan Lee, the author behind Netflix and the BBC’s upcoming drama series Lockerbie.

The series is a contemporary take on the monster hunter Dr. Abraham Van Helsing. He uses his uniquely inquisitive mind working alongside his ex, relentless FBI special agent Mina Harker, to solve New York City’s most harrowing cases, per the logline.

According to the report, “Elementary creator Rob Doherty is executive producing the project alongside Carl Beverly and Sarah Timberman under their deal with Lionsgate Television.”

If you’re unfamiliar, Van Helsing is a fictional character from the 1897 gothic horror novel Dracula written by Bram Stoker. He was first brought to life by Edward Van Sloan in the 1931 adaptation. There was also the 2004 action horror film starring Hugh Jackman as Van Helsing directed by Stephen Sommers, as well as the female fronted Syfy series starring Kelly Overton.

The character has become one of the most popular monster hunters in pop culture, and this will likely feel like a “Monster of the Week” show in the vein of monster hunter procedurals like Buffy The Vampire Slayer and The X-Files. Stay tuned for casting news on CBS’ Van Helsing.
