Has James Bond found its next director in Edward Berger?

July 3, 2024 by EJ Moreno

In the massive moviemaking machine that is IP filmmaking, there’s no rest for the wicked or those who stop the wicked. Just ask those making the new James Bond possible.

As the new 007 era begins to take shape, Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli seem to face the daunting task of finding the ship’s new captain, also known as who will direct the next James Bond movie.

With the journey seeing everyone from Christopher Nolan to a returning Martin Campbell throwing their hat in the race, one name is beginning to seem like a frontrunner. German-born filmmaker Edward Berger is reportedly a top name for the gig, coming off his Oscar-winning war film All Quiet on the Western Front.

Two scoopers, World of Reel and Jeff Sneider, report that Berger is taking shape as the best pick for the directing gig, and his credentials are hard to ignore. Out of its 14 nominations at the 76th British Academy Film Awards, All Quiet on the Western Front won seven, including Best Film. It also cleaned up the Academy Awards with Best International Feature, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, and Best Production Design wins.

Berger just began production on a new thriller, The Ballad of a Small Player, set to star Colin Farrell and Tilda Swinton for Netflix. We’ll see his follow-up to All Quiet on the Western Front this November when Conclave is released in the United States by Focus Features.

As for who else is up for the James Bond directing gig, sources say David Michod (The King) and Kelly Marcel (Venom: The Last Dance) are also in the running.
