Transformers director Steven Caple Jr. set to helm I Am Legend 2

July 27, 2024 by Matt Rodgers

Having directed successful franchise installments such as Creed II ($214M) and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts ($438M), Warner Bros. are reportedly turning to Steven Caple Jr. to helm I Am Legend 2.

According to Deadline the studio has spoken to a number of directors, but are keen for Caple Jr. to reunite with his Creed II-star Michael B. Jordan, who has been cast alongside the returning Will Smith for quite some time now.

On which, the film’s screenwriter and producer Akiva Goldsman confirmed to Comic-Con that I Am Legend 2 would pick up after the events of the alternative ending, which saw Will Smith’s character survive his final-reel showdown with the vampire-like infected, rather than explode in an act of heroic self-sacrifice.

The Francis Lawrence-directed film earned $585 million worldwide, $256 million of which was wrung up at the North American box-office. The film comes almost eighteen years after the original and around seventy years since Richard Matheson’s I Am Legend novel was published.
