Deadpool & Wolverine opens with R-rated record and $438 million worldwide

July 28, 2024 by Matt Rodgers

Deadpool & Wolverine answered Marvel’s prayers over the weekend by landing the eighth biggest opening at the North American box-office, and the largest R-rated debut of-all-time.

With $205 million at the U.S. box-office, Deadpool & Wolverine almost eclipsed the worldwide tally of the previous MCU-installment The Marvels, which tapped out at $206 million in November of last year, providing a much-needed boost at a time that even Reynolds’ Deadpool admits is “a bit of a low point” in the series.

The performance of the Shawn Levy-directed sequel was just as impressive overseas, where it earned $233.3 million, for a worldwide start of $438.3 million, becoming the biggest global bow since Avatar: The Way of the Water.

In second place Twisters was always going to be blown off-course by the Marvel juggernaut, but still held impressively with a -56% decline and a $36 million weekend. The Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones-led blockbuster now stands at $155.6 million domestic.
