James Cameron’s Avatar 3 titled Avatar: Fire and Ash

August 11, 2024 by Gary Collinson

Disney held its biennial pop culture celebration D23 this weekend, and tucked in among all the latest reveals from Disney, Pixar, Lucasfilm, Marvel et. al. came one little tidbit from Avatar director James Cameron and stars Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana who were on hand at the convention to reveal the official title for the third instalment in the blockbuster franchise – Avatar: Fire and Ash.

Cameron also offered up a few words to hype the threequel, stating that it features “high emotional stakes” and “new cultures and settings” and that we’ll “see more of Pandora the planet than you ever see saw before. The new film isn’t what you expect, but it’s definitely what you want.”

The title Fire and Ash means Cameron has deviated from his original planned titles for the Avatar sequels, with a leak in 2019 correcting revealing Avatar: The Way of Water for the second chapter and revealing that the filmmaker was using the working titles Avatar: The Seed Bearer, Avatar: The Tulkun Rider and Avatar: The Quest for Eywa for three through five.

Avatar: Fire and Ash is directed by James Cameron and features the return of cast members Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Giovanni Ribisi, Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement, Edie Falco, Britain Dalton, Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, Jack Champion, Bailey Bass, Filip Geljo, Dileep A. Rao, Matt Gerald and Brandan Cowell, while new additions include David Thewlis, Oona Chaplin and Michelle Yeoh.

Avatar: Fire and Ash is currently slated for release on December 19th 2025.
