New Doctor Who: The Fourth Doctor full-cast audio adventure now available from Big Finish

September 4, 2024 by Andrew Newton

The Fourth Doctor Adventures: Dominant Species, the thrilling conclusion to series 13 of The Fourth Doctor Adventures is now available to purchase from Big Finish Productions. This new box set features two new adventures for the Fourth Doctor (played once again by the wonderful Tom Baker) with one seeing the return of an old adversary from 1968.

The first new adventure in the box set is The Face in the Storm by Sarah Grochala.  This new adventure is inspired by a true story and sees the Fourth Doctor, and companions Harry Sullivan (Christopher Naylor) and Naomi Cross (Eleanor Crooks) arrive in the cargo hold of the SS Maycrest, a ship transporting soldiers across the Atlantic in 1916. The trio soon discover that troops aren’t the only thing being transported, there’s also a crate that is unnaturally cold but the deadliest threat to all on board is not in the crate.

The second adventure, Dominant Species by John Dorney sees the return of the Dominators, augmented humanoids who terrorise the universe with robots called the Quarks. In this adventure, the population of the planet Taleeria is enslaved by the Dominators so when the Fourth Doctor and his companions arrive it should be a piece of cake to free them, unfortunately the three become separated and the Dominators aren’t going to give up easily.

Joining Tom Baker, Christopher Naylor and Eleanor Crooks are Clive Wood, Clive Hayward, Joseph Kloska, Indra Ové, Rosalyn Landor, Polly Kemp, Kayi Ushe, Reece Pantry, Christopher Weeks and Emily Woodward.

From L to R: John Dorney, Clive Hayward, Clive Wood, Tom Baker, Nicholas Briggs, Christopher Naylor, Indra Ove, Eleanor Crooks, Emily Woodward, David Richardson

Christopher Naylor said: “Recording this run of stories has been wonderful. Harry was a very iconic character for me as a very young Doctor Who viewer. Ian Marter’s performance was so subtle, sympathetic, funny, and intelligent. Being able to play Harry Sullivan has been an extraordinary experience that I could never had imagined would happen. These stories feel so faithful to the tone of those stories from way back, very respectful of the characters, and they have a lovely completeness, it’s very pleasing the way it wraps up. I hope people enjoy them; we’ve had such a great time recording them.”

Tom Baker added: “I’ve been making an absolute feast of Dominant Species! This is a wonderful composition of violence and ambition and skullduggery and cheating and horror. It’s right up to the minute actually, all this duplicity and search for power, and overriding it all is the Doctor, who’s trying to make sense of the tumultuous struggle. There are some great villains.”

Doctor Who – The Fourth Doctor Adventures: Dominant Species is available now from the Big Finish website as a collector’s edition 3-disc CD box set and digital download for £19.99 or as digital download only for £16.99.
