Trailer for Lovecraftian horror Decadent looks at the signs of madness

September 19, 2024 by Andrew Newton

Fulqrum Publishing and Incantation Games have revealed a new trailer for their upcoming Lovecraftian horror FPS Decadent.  This new trailer, seen below, provides viewers with a look at the game’s Madness system and how it can affect the story and the character’s abilities.

Decadent is an atmospheric exploration, Lovecraftian horror that sees players take the role of John Lorn, a royal explorer and a veteran of the Great War, who has become an occultist. During one of his occult experiments he has become host to a mysterious parasite, one that gives him strange abilities at the expense of his sanity.  As he follows the lost Miskatonic University expedition to find his missing son, John will walk the fine line that separates good and evil and sanity and insanity.

On his quest to find his son, John will encounter many horrors that will drain his sanity, these can include the Weirds, anomalous locations where laws of nature do not apply, otherworldly abominations and even more normal stressful situations like running out of ammo in the middle of a fight. As sanity drains, the madness begins to take hold and impact the game.

Madness in Decadent not only serves as a penalty to the player, it also has its more useful boons. These pros and cons are:

  • Moderate Madness will cause mild vision distortions such as blurred textures but will allow players to detect enemies much quicker and see their outlines even before they would normally come into sight, which will give players the chance to avoid ambushes etc.
  • Total Madness will really mess with what the players can see as colours and objects become distorted and either too bright or too dull. Hallucinations will begin and non-existent enemies can appear and players will even find it more difficult to control their weapon or carry out inventory management.

Decadent is set to launch on Playstation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC (via Steam, Epic Games Store, GoG and other digital stores) in 2025.
