Production begins on the Peaky Blinders film

September 30, 2024 by Ricky Church

Tommy Shelby is back as today marks the beginning of production on the Peaky Blinders feature film, and to celebrate Netflix has released the first image of Cillian Murphy as an aging Tommy along with a set photo of him and series creator Steven Knight.

Peaky Blinders is based on the real Peaky Blinders gang run by the Shelby crime family in Birmingham. The series follows Murphy’s Thomas Shelby, the leader of the flat-cap wearing clan, in the aftermath of World War I and his rise through both the criminal and political ranks. The series premiered in 2013 and ran for six seasons, ending in 2022.

It is unknown who else from the original cast will be returning for the feature film, but newcomers include Dune‘s Rebecca Ferguson and Saltburn‘s Barry Keoghan. Story details are also being kept under wraps, but it will see the franchise move into the World War II era and how the war affects Tommy and the rest of the Shelby family. Director Tom Harper, who directed a few episodes of Peaky Blinders, is back to helm the feature.

“I’m thrilled to see the cameras rolling on this new chapter of the Peaky Blinders story, set during World War II. The country is at war, and so, of course, are our Peaky Blinders,” said Knight.

“There’s a great feeling of anticipation and excitement amongst our outstanding cast and crew,” Harper said. “We’re grateful to the fans for getting us to this point and believe this next chapter is going to deliver something extraordinary.”
