Get retro with trailer for horror The Last Video Store

October 17, 2024 by Ricky Church

Get ready to go retro in The Last Video Store, a horror film that sees a young woman in possession of a cursed VHS tape that lets loose several iconic horror murderers and monsters.

The Last Video Store is a Canadian production from Genco Pictures and NJC Films. It has been doing the rounds at various film festivals including the UK’s Frightfest, Spain’s Terror Mollins, Australia’s Monster Fest and Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas. The film has been acquired by Black Fawn Distribution for the limited theatrical run with an eye for home media release in early 2025. Arrow Video will distribute the film in the US and UK.

“Directors Cody Kennedy and Tim Rutherford worked relentlessly for years to create this wild tribute to 80’s genre filmmaking and video stores, a movie that smells like buttery popcorn and VHS plastic,” said Genco’s Laurence Gendron. “I know how much we love and appreciate movies in Canada, and I can’t wait for audiences to discover The Last Video Store.”

“This film has everything you want in a great retro popcorn flick,” Black Fawn’s CF Benner said. “It’s funny, it’s gory, and most importantly, it’s got a lot of heart. It’s been a thrill to work with such an enthusiastic filmmaking team and we couldn’t be happier to bring The Last Video Store to Canadian cinemas and display it on the shelf next to our other releases.”

A young woman – who happens to have a legendary “cursed tape” in her possession – drops off an old VHS collection at her local video store. When she and the store’s owner decide to watch the tape in question, they awaken a long dormant curse that releases an array of killer cinematic villains into the real world.

The Last Video Store stars Kevin Martin, Yaayaa Adams, Josh Lenner, Leland Tilden and Matthew Kennedy. The film is directed by Cody Kennedy and Tim Rutherford and written by Joshua Roach and Tim Rutherford. Greg Jeffs and Laurence Gendron serve as producers on the film.

The Last Video Store will play in select Canadian theatres in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton towards the end of October and in Hamilton next month on November 20th. It has also been added to the Forest City Film Festival in London, Ontario as well as Hellifax Horror Fest in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
