Mike Flanagan is heading to prom with series adaptation of Stephen King’s Carrie

October 26, 2024 by Gary Collinson

Mike Flanagan is going right back to the beginning for his next Stephen King project, with Deadline reporting that Flanagan and his producing partner Trevor Macy have set an eight-episode series adaptation of King’s 1974 debut novel Carrie at Prime Video.

Carrie tells the story of Carrie White, a timid high school student living with her abusive, fanatically religious mother and suffering relentless bullying by her peers, who uses her developing powers of telekinesis to get her revenge. The book was famously adapted for the big screen in 1976 by director Brian de Palma, with Sissy Spacek in the title role; a belated sequel followed to little fanfare in 1999, along with a TV movie adaptation in 2002 and feature remake in 2013.

Flanagan has previously directed feature adaptations of Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep, and is coming off the Toronto International Film Festival premiere of his latest, The Life of Chuck, which will release in 2025. He’s also been working on an adaptation of King’s magnum opus The Dark Tower as part of his deal with Amazon, although it’s been a while since we had an update on that.
