Matt Reeves on The Batman Part II progress and The Penguin season 2 potential

December 19, 2024 by Ricky Church

Matt Reeves has been very busy with his projects tied to his Batman universe which began in 2022’s The Batman and has continued with the HBO series The Penguin. That series recently concluded its first season a few weeks ago and now attention has turned to Reeves’ sequel The Batman Part II.

In Variety‘s latest Directors on Directors interview Reeves sat down with his The Batman actress Zoë Kravitz, who portrayed Selina Kyle/Catwoman. The two spoke about The Batman, the status of its sequel and the possibility of a second season for The Penguin.

On The Batman Part II, which Kravitz is set to reprise her role as Catwoman, Reeves was brief in his update but did reveal the screenplay is nearly complete, telling her “Yeah, we’re finishing the script. We’re going to be shooting next year.”

As for The Penguin, the series saw Colin Farrell reprise his role as Oz Cobb/The Penguin in the aftermath of The Riddler’s destructive rampage in The Batman. As the mob is left in a power vacuum after the death of Carmine Falcone, Penguin schemes and does everything he can to rule the Gotham City underworld. The Penguin ended with some idea of where Oz and other characters would be in The Batman Part II as he effectively is in control of the mob.

Kravitz asked Reeves “And more of these shows? Everyone’s freaking out over The Penguin.” Reeves responded that there is potential for The Penguin to continue, telling her “we’re talking to [showrunner] Lauren [LeFranc] about doing another season. That was a special experience. I just feel really fortunate. These characters don’t belong to me; they belong to the world. It comes down to whether you can approach them in a way that expresses something personal.”
