Nosferatu’s Robert Eggers to write and direct a Labyrinth sequel?

December 28, 2024 by Matt Rodgers

If the rumour mill is to be believed, Nosferatu director Robert Eggers is set to swap Count Orlok for The Goblin King and direct a sequel to Jim Henson cult-classic Labyrinth.

According to Jeff Sneider’s The InSneider report Eggers has signed on to write and direct a sequel to Jim Henson’s 1986 fantasy adventure, and is reported to be collaborating on a script with either his brother Max Eggers, or his co-writer on The Northman, Sigurjón Birgir Sigurðsson. Having just worked with Eggers on Nosferatu, Chris Columbus will produce alongside his daughter Eleanor, for Sony Pictures and The Jim Henson Company.

Despite being something of a commercial disaster upon release, grossing just $14 million worldwide, Labyrinth has developed a huge following during the intervening years, with reports of a sequel regularly filling the news pages. The Black Phone and Doctor Strange‘s Scott Derrickson was linked to a follow-up for the longest time, before creative differences saw him leave the project.

Sneider’s report states that it will not be a remake of the original film, which told the story of sixteen-year-old Sarah (Jennifer Connelly), who is given thirteen hours to solve a labyrinth in order to rescue her baby brother when her wish for him to be taken away is granted by the Goblin King Jareth (David Bowie).
