While we await the release of James Gunn’s Superman on the big screen this summer, DC Studios has begun production on its next tentpole film Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow starring Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon) as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl.
The film is based upon the graphic novel of the same name by writer Tom King and artist Bilquis Evely. King announced production had begun in an Instagram post that has since been deleted. He said, though, “As filming begins on Supergirl Woman of Tomorrow, here’s the unlettered cover to issue 1. I think genius [Bilquis Evely] first image drawn from the book. Nailed it right out of the gate.”
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow follows Supergirl on a cosmic journey as she meets Ruthye Mary Knolle, a young girl whose father had recently been murdered and has begun a quest to avenge his death.. Together they set out chasing the villainous Krem of the Yellow Hills, the man who killed Ruthye’s father, across the galaxy in their attempts to bring him to justice and save other innocents.
Production is currently taking place in the UK. The film stars Alcock, who is expected to make her first appearance as Supergirl in Gunn’s Superman, alongside Eve Ridley (3 Body Problem) as Ruthye and Matthias Schoenaerts (The Old Guard) as Krem. Also starring is Jason Momoa who recently traded his trident for a space motorcycle as he will play the intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo in Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will be directed by Craig Gillespie from a script by Ana Nogueira. Gunn and Safran will executive produce.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will be released on June 26th, 2026.
