Buffy the Vampire Slayer sequel series with Sarah Michelle Gellar close to pilot order at Hulu

February 3, 2025 by Ricky Church

Get your stakes ready Slayer fans. Variety has reported Hulu is nearing a pilot order for a sequel series to Buffy the Vampire Slayer with original star Sarah Michelle Gellar in talks to reprise her iconic role.

The purposed sequel series will focus on a new Slayer, following the show’s canon that a slayer is chosen once every generation to protect the world from vampires, demons and other supernatural threats. Gellar would appear in a recurring role rather than a main role or lead the series herself to focus on the new Slayer.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer followed Buffy Summers, a Slayer chosen by fate to protect the world from otherworldly threats. The series was inspired by the 1992 cult film of the same name, though it is unconnected to the film and began its own continuity. The series was created by Joss Whedon and has been hailed as one of the best TV series of the late 90s and early 00s which, along with series like The X-Files, popularized serialized storytelling in TV series as opposed to episodic adventures that only loosely followed an overall plot.

The new series, if picked up, will be showrun, written and executive produced by Nora and Lila Zuckerman with Nomadland and Eternals director Chloé Zhao to direct and executive produce through her company Book of Shadows. Gellar will also executive produce alongside original Buffy exec producers Gail Berman. Fran Kuzui and Kaz Kuzui, and Dolly Parton.

Though he created the series, Whedon will have no involvement in the sequel after several cast members from the original series, particularly Charisma Carpenter and Michelle Tratchenberg, spoke out against his behaviour on the set of Buffy and its spin-off Angel with his mistreatment of them and fellow crew. That behaviour, combined with his conduct when he took over WB’s DCEU film Justice League as well as his affairs with crew and fans, led to the cancellation of his HBO series The Nevers as well as other projects.

What do you think of a Buffy sequel? Are you interested in a new Slayer generation or want to see SMG battling evil herself again? Let us know on our social channels at @FlickeringMyth…
