Comic Book Review – Jim Henson’s Labyrinth Original Motion Picture Adaptation

February 9, 2025 by Andrew Newton

Andrew Newton reviews Jim Henson’s Labyrinth Original Motion Picture Adaptation from Boom! Studios…

Jim Henson’s Labyrinth comic book adaptation, published by Boom Studios, brings the beloved 1986 film to both longtime fans and newcomers in a fresh way. The story, originally conceived by Jim Henson and starring Jennifer Connelly and the legendary David Bowie on screen, has been faithfully adapted and captures the enchanting yet eerie atmosphere of the film.

The artwork by Eisner Award Hall of Fame artist John Buscema is a high point, beautifully embodying Brian Froud’s original character designs. The world of the Goblin King’s labyrinth is richly illustrated, bringing Sarah’s journey to life in a way that feels both nostalgic and yet new.

This adaptation captures the fantasy of the story while staying true to its core themes of self-discovery, growing up and responsibility. It remains faithful to the film but offers deeper insight into Jareth’s character, as well as a closer look at Sarah’s thoughts and personal growth throughout her journey.

One of the most enthralling aspects of this comic book adaptation is how it keeps the whimsical yet unsettling tone that made the film so memorable. The dialogue stays largely true to the original script, with slight adjustments to suit the comic format. Some may feel the story is a bit rushed in comparison to the film, but the essence of Labyrinth remains the same.

Overall, Boom Studios’ Labyrinth comic is a worthy adaptation of Jim Henson’s classic. Its striking artwork and concise storytelling serve as a love letter to the original movie. Fans of the film will not be disappointed and will find much to enjoy, while newcomers may desire to seek out the movie after experiencing its magic in this format.

Rating: 10/10
