SYNOPSIS:
After a troubled young girl bursts into their home psychiatry practice claiming that a terrifying entity is feeding on her, Jordan and her clairvoyant mother must find a way to stop the evil force before the girl is consumed completely.
The Heretics director Chad Archibald’s latest film It Feeds is a great supernatural horror with a dash of psychological thriller, utilizing its cast led by Ashley Greene and its eerie visuals and cinematography to great effect.
The film follows Greene as Cynthia, a woman with psychic abilities who uses her powers to help clients through deep-rooted trauma. When a young girl runs into her home office begging for help, Cynthia feels a malevolent entity feeding off her. When it becomes attracted to her daughter Jordan, they have to find a way to stop this entity once and for all.
It Feeds strikes a nice balance between its character driven story and horror elements, blending both the supernatural and psychological genres. Archibald’s script combined with Greene and her co-stars performances draw you in, displaying their depth through several intriguing ways as they face against this being. Greene and Ellie O’Brien share great chemistry together as the film’s mother-daughter duo along with how their relationship defies certain tropes, such as the daughter not believing in or being embarrassed by her mom’s abilities or the usual teenage rebellion.
Whether its through the family trauma Cynthia and Jordan struggle with or the actions Shawn Ashmore’s desperate father feels forced to take, the characters are relatable and diverse in their personalities. For instance, while everyone mentioned above is dealing with the grave danger from the entity, Juno Rinaldi brings both comic relief and seriousness to her role as an eccentric former client of Cynthia’s who tries to help them in any way she can.
Outside of the story and performances, two aspects that gives It Feeds its own personality is the cinematography and creature designs. The visuals do much to enhance the eerie atmosphere throughout the film, particularly whenever Cynthia enters someone’s mind or the mysterious entity makes its presence known. It has a patient quality to it where the film lets the tension build before capitalizing on it rather than just going straight to jump scares or showing us the full look at the creature and its victims. The make-up on the entity and those who are harmed by it is really well done to make it as creepy, frightening and painful as possible. Combined together, it all enhances the unsettling nature of the film.
It Feeds is captivating with its terrifying visuals and Ashley Greene’s strong performance. Archibald’s blend of the supernatural and psychological genres gives the film its own identity and voice as it focuses on trauma and the lengths some people are willing to go in order to survive. With It Feeds gearing up for its Canadian premiere and festival run, fans looking for a deep and eerie scare would do well to check it out on the big screen.
