Lionsgate shares The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping title treatment

April 3, 2025 by Gary Collinson

As part of the studio’s CinemaCon presentation this week, Lionsgate has officially announced its feature film adaptation of The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, the latest novel in author Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games saga.

Along with the title treatment, Lionsgate also shared a brief synopsis for the film, which reads:

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping will revisit the world of Panem 24 years before the events of The Hunger Games, starting on the morning of the reaping of the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell.

Suzanne Collins’ novel – the sequel prequel to her original Hunger Games trilogy after The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes – was released last month and scored the best opening for the book series with over 1.5 million copies sold in its first week.

The film adaptation will see franchise veteran Francis Lawrence back in the director’s chair, helming from a script by screenwriter Billy Ray, who returns to the series for the first time since the original 2012 film (the only not to have been directed by Lawrence). As yet, there’s no word on any casting, but the film is set for release on November 20th 2026.
