Sinners sees one of Hollywood’s best second weekends ever at the box office

April 28, 2025 by EJ Moreno

Sinners has officially solidified itself as one of the biggest modern films. Not only did it boast an impressive opening weekend, but the Ryan Coogler-helmed film is seeing a wild second weekend.

In its second weekend, it dropped only 6%, bringing in a strong $45 million compared to its $48 million start. Sinners now claims the smallest second-weekend drop for any film opening over $40 million since 2009’s Avatar. Looking at its genre, it claims the smallest second-weekend ever for an R-rated horror title.

It faced some interesting competition this weekend with the release of the Ben Affleck-led The Accountant 2 and Disney’s 20th anniversary release of Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. The Accountant 2 opened to an estimated $24.6 million, and the Star Wars prequel nabbed an estimated $25.2 million and scored one of the top openings ever for a rerelease.

Back to the record-breaking weekend, Michael B. Jordan’s dual performance saw director Ryan Coogler’s best second weekend ever for a non-Marvel movie, and the second-best sophomore weekend for an R-rated horror movie overall (behind another horror blockbuster, 2017’s It).

At the time of writing, Sinners has grossed $122.5 million in North America and $161.6 million globally, against a $90 million production budget.

“Trying to leave their troubled lives behind, twin brothers (Jordan) return to their hometown to start again, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back.”

The film features Michael B. Jordan in a dual role, alongside a cast that includes Hailee Steinfeld, Jack O’Connell, and Delroy Lindo.

Sinners is now playing in cinemas.
