Edward Berger to direct Brad Pitt in The Riders

April 28, 2025 by Matt Rodgers

Conclave director Edward Berger has lined up Brad Pitt to star in his adaptation of Booker Prize shortlisted novel The Riders.

Published in 1994, the Tim Winton novel tells the story of an Australian man named Fred Scully, who along with his wife Jennifer and their seven-year-old daughter Billie, are set to emigrate from Down Under to Ireland. However, on the day they are set to meet him in their new homeland, only a traumatised Billie arrives on the plane. The rest of the novel traces their journey around Europe attempting to find out what happened to Jennifer.

Per Deadline’s report, Pitt will play Fred in The Riders, which is set to be adapted by Bones and All and Suspiria scribe David Kajganich. The film will be produced by Scott Free Productions, Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment, and Berger’s own Nine Hours production company, with A24 securing the rights to distribute.

The All Quiet on the Western Front Academy Award winner is coming off the back of 8 Oscar nominations for his critically acclaimed Papal drama, while Pitt will get working on his Australian accent once F1 has raced out of the blocks this June, and following production on David Fincher’s The Continuing Adventures Of Cliff Booth for Netlix.
