Jonathan Daviss to bring to life Snoop Dogg on the big screen

June 9, 2025 by EJ Moreno

Jonathan Daviss will bring to life one of music’s most recognizable faces, with a Snoop Dogg biopic in the works at Universal Pictures.

In a new report from Deadline, Daviss will star in the upcoming project with Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow, Coming 2 America) set to direct. The film will be produced by Snoop Dogg, Brian Grazer, and Death Row Pictures president Sara Ramaker.

Per Deadline: “The film is a look at how Calvin Broadus Jr. entered the West Coast hip-hop fray. Taking the moniker Snoop Doggy Dogg, Snoop brought his laid-back drawling delivery and sharp lyrics to Death Row Records, where he worked with Dr Dre on his smash debut album Doggystyle. He broadened into other platforms to the point he might well be seen rubbing elbows with Martha Stewart or getting in the pool with Michael Phelps during the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he became one of the high points of that Olympiad on NBC and Peacock.”

Snoop Dogg has become one of pop culture’s most prominent figures. Before his recent era of appearing in Fortnite or chumming up with Martha Stewart, he was one of rap’s biggest voices, with 12 Top 10 entries on the Billboard Hot 100 and 3 #1 records. He has sold over 35 million records worldwide, and his accolades include an American Music Award, a Primetime Emmy Award, two Sports Emmy Awards, and 17 Grammy Award nominations. In 2023, he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Trying to capture the essence of the enigmatic figure, but young actor Jonathan Daviss is well on his way to take on that task. Daviss has already starred in Outer Banks, playing the role of Pope in the Netflix YA drama. His other credits include Netflix’s Do Revenge, Age of Summer, and Edge of the World.

The still-untitled biopic is the first project under Death Row Pictures’ overall deal with NBCUniversal Entertainment & Studios, as the infamous record label is looking to move into the world of entertainment in new ways. Death Row Records was founded in 1991 by The D.O.C., Dr. Dre, Suge Knight, and Dick Griffey. From there, an era of rap music was defined by its West Coast sound, including classics such as Dr. Dre’s The Chronic, Snoop Dogg’s Doggystyle, and Tupac’s All Eyez on Me. Death Row Records filed for bankruptcy in 2006 and would subsequently be sold off to different companies over the years. It was not until February 2022 that Snoop Dogg purchased Death Row from MNRK Music Group. Snoop Dogg and Death Row Pictures inked a multi-year deal with NBCUniversal earlier this year.

Stay tuned to Flickering Myth for any updates on this Snoop Dogg biopic.
