Dune 3 gets official title as production begins

July 9, 2025 by Ricky Church

Audiences will soon return to Arrakis as Denis Villeneuve has begun production on the anticipated next chapter in his Dune saga. Adapting Frank Herbert’s Dune Messiah, the official title will not follow the novel and instead follow the titling of its predecessor as Dune: Part Three.

The film’s Instagram account announced the start of filming with an image of the Arrakis’ vast desert with the caption “‘…on a journey into that land where we walk without footprints.’ Production has begun on the next film in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune trilogy.”

Dune: Part Three will see Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya reprising their roles as Paul Muad’Dib Atredies and Chani. Dune Messiah begins over a decade into Paul’s rule over the Imperium after his holy war burned through the galaxy and cemented Paul’s control, but he still has to overcome various schemes from his enemies looking to usurp him and re-establish the old ways.

Joining Chalamet and Zendeya from the previous films will be Jason Momoa and Florence Pugh with Nakoa-Wolf Momoa and Ida Brooke featuring in the cast. While it has not been officially announced as of yet, Robert Pattinson has been said to play the film’s villain Scytale.

Dune: Part Three will have sequences filmed in IMAX, though will not be filmed fully in the format as Christopher Nolan’s Greek epic The Odyssey is currently doing.

Dune: Part Three will be released on December 18th, 2026.
