Last week J.J. Abrams spoke about diversity in the Star Wars universe, stating that he believes it is only a matter of time before a gay character is introduced to the galaxy far, far away. But according to Mark Hamill, the Saga could have had a gay character all along in Luke Skywalker – if that’s how viewers want to see him.
“In the old days you would get fan mail,” Hamill tells The Sun. “But now fans are writing and ask all these questions, ‘I’m bullied in school … I’m afraid to come out.’ They say to me, ‘Could Luke be gay?’ I’d say it is meant to be interpreted by the viewer. If you think Luke is gay, of course he is. You should not be ashamed of it. Judge Luke by his character, not by who he loves.”
Hamill reprised the role of Luke Skywalker last year for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and is currently in production on the next chapter of the Sequel Trilogy, Star Wars: Episode VIII, which is set for release in December 2017.
