Retro-inspired shooter Darkenstein 3D launches for free

October 21, 2025 by Andrew Newton

The fast-paced retro shooter Darkenstein 3D is now available on Steam, completely free. Created by solo developer Rowye and published by industry veterans MicroProse, Darkenstein 3D brings all the beloved features of ‘90s FPS action, from fast movement to tight gunplay. Watch the new trailer below to see more of this love letter to the golden age of shooters.

Inspired by Wolfenstein 3D and DOOM, Darkenstein 3D takes players to 1940s Germany as an American hobo who has had his beloved dog kidnapped by the Nazi scum. Armed only with a shotgun and a desire for revenge, players will need to dive deep into the enemy fortress, fight their way through waves of Axis soldiers, aliens, and goodness knows what else, to rescue their kidnapped dog, Gunther.

In a world crumbling under the weight of war, players will discover all manner of conspiracies, including alien secrets, strange powers and hidden horrors. Fortunately, players will have a vicious rat companion to help as they fight their way through the game’s 13 handcrafted levels in search of Gunther.

Players will get to explore castles, caves, valleys, and desert towns, discover secrets and treasure and enjoy the total bloodbath that is a vicious rat combined with grenades. Revel in the over-the-top gore and ragdoll physics that made FPS games of the 90s so popular.

Featuring:

  • 13 handcrafted levels filled with traps, secrets, treasures and more.
  • Watch physics-based carnage with enemies ragdolling across the battlefield.
  • Use the vicious rat companion to maximum effect and maximum chaos.
  • Master strafes, precise aiming and quick thinking.
  • An original 90s style, adrenaline-filled soundtrack.
  • The best reward at the end of a game ever, a dog!

Darkenstein 3D is available on Steam for free now.
